Public Space as a Practice

When I studied architecture in Weimar in the early 2000s, the field was largely shaped by the role model of the so-called “star architect.” Guided by a growing discomfort with this figure and a desire to create spaces collectively, I was drawn to the field of public space.

I understand public space as a space of negotiation—where critical, artistic, and collective practices, both human and more-than-human, come together. Within processes of collective space production, my work seeks to open spaces of imagination, desire, and conversation that respectfully shape the reality and materiality of a place.

The focus lies on less definable spatial categories such as the semi-public, the grey zones, and informal practices. It is within these spaces that power structures can begin to shift, allowing questions such as Who cares? andWho has access? to be felt, voiced, and re-negotiated.
